(Released February 21, 2001) The landmark State Supreme Court decision issued on January 10, 2001 could have an enormous positive impact on the quality of education for children across New York State. In his decision in Campaign for Fiscal Equity v. State of New York, Judge Leland DeGrasse affirmed the constitutional right of every child in New York State to receive a sound basic education, and ordered the New York State Legislature to establish a new state education funding formula by September 2001. The new formula must provide enough resources to every school to give every child in New York State a sound basic education. The Public Policy and Education Fund is releasing this report to illustrate the beneficial impact the court decision could have on school children in the Southern Tier. This is the first in a series of reports PPEF will release on the impact of the CFE decision on schools throughout the state.
