KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

jituJITU BROWN, the National Director of the Journey for Justice Alliance who just participated in a 34 day hunger strike to save Walter H. Dyett High School in Chicago, will speak about the importance of family engagement. He was born on Chicago’s south side and is a product of Chicago’s public school system.  Jitu started volunteering with the Kenwood Oakland Community Organization (KOCO) in 1991, became a board member in 1993 and served as the Board president for a number of years.  He joined the staff as education organizer in 2006.  Jitu has organized in the Kenwood Oakland neighborhood for over 17 years bringing community voices to the table on school issues. The Journey for Justice Alliance brings together grassroots community, youth, and parent-led organizations in 23 cities across the country to demand community-driven alternatives to the privatization of and dismantling of public schools systems.

hedyHEDY CHANG, the Director of the National Organization, Attendance Works, will offer tools to increase attendance and help keep students in school. A skilled presenter, facilitator, researcher and writer, she co-authored the seminal report, Present, Engaged and Accounted For: The Critical Importance of Addressing Chronic Absence in the Early Grades, as well as numerous other articles about student attendance. Deeply committed to promoting two-generation solutions to achieving a more just and equitable society, Hedy has spent more than two decades working in the fields of family support, family economic success, education and child development. In February 2013, Hedy was named by the White House as a Champion of Change for her commitment to furthering African American Education. Hedy is also the mother of two school-aged sons who attend public school in San Francisco.
